In 2015, bunq officially introduced itself to the world with its very first update—marking the birth of a new kind of bank. Built from the ground up by a small, passionate team, bunq set out to redefine how people experience money: fast, transparent, and joyful. What began as a startup idea during the height of the financial crisis soon became the first new independent bank in the Netherlands in 35 years.
At the launch, bunq unveiled the foundation of its philosophy—real-time banking built for people, not institutions. Every payment, transfer, and update would happen instantly, with full transparency and control in the hands of users.
Founder Ali Niknam introduced bunq’s two guiding principles:
