To enhance the security of online card payments across the European Economic Area (EEA), we’ve implemented 3DS, also known as Strong Customer Authentication (SCA). This latest security standard ensures safer transactions while keeping the process simple.
How do I approve a 3DS payment?
Once you place an online card payment, you’ll receive a push notification in the bunq app. By tapping on this notification, you’ll have the ability to either approve or decline this transaction.
If you miss the notification, follow these steps:
Tap on the 🛎️bell icon in the top left corner
Tap on the notification
Approve or decline the payment
Why did my 3DS payment fail?
Here are some common reasons why a 3DS payment has failed:
Approval timed out: You didn’t approve the payment within 15 minutes and the approval link expired.
Push notification not received: Your phone didn’t get the approval request due to network issues.
Outdated app: Your bunq app isn’t updated to the latest version.
Merchant doesn’t support 3DS: Some stores haven’t fully implemented the 3DS check. In these cases we deny the payment to ensure that it’s really you paying and ask the store to trigger a security check.
Payment limit reached: Your transaction exceeds your card or Auto Accept limit.
What should I do if my 3DS payment fails?
If you see Your payment was declined due to 3DS Secure Authentication failure, here's what to do:
Tap on your Profile in the top left corner
Tap on ⚙️Settings
Tap on "Security"
Under "Auto Accepted" tap on "Card Payments"
Choose the payment of the merchant you want to add
Set the Auto Accept limit, or leave it unlimited if you prefer.
