How does Tip Protection work?

Hey bunqers 🌈

As the bank of The Free, we want to make sure your money is always protected 🔒

Now you can pay with your card worry-free. The bunq app automatically detects when you’re overcharged for a tip and notifies you instantly.

How does Tip Protection work?

When paying at a restaurant, you’ll often be asked if you want to offer a tip. If your bill is €100 and your Tip Protection is set as 21%, the protected amount will be rounded to the next €5. Thus, if you get charged more than €125, you’ll automatically get a notification that you were overcharged.

How can I enable this feature on my card?

  1. Go to the 💳Cards tab

  2. Tap on the preferred card

  3. Tap on ⚙️ Settings

  4. Tap on Tip Protection

  5. Enable the Tip Protection toggle

Can I change the tip percentage?

You can easily change the percentage by following the steps below:

  1. Go to the 💳Cards tab

  2. Tap on the preferred card

  3. Tap on ⚙️ Settings

  4. Select Tip Protection

  5. Adjust the desired percentage

Note: You can set your Tip Protection to a maximum of 100%

What’s the "Original Amount" under my card payment?

We’ll always let you know if a merchant does charge more than the initial payment request. This way, you can stay in control and request your money back from the merchant if necessary.

When a payment amount changes, we show you the final settled amount and include the original amount charged just below. You always know exactly what you've paid, even if the final amount differs.

A payment can get updated when certain merchants, like restaurants, hotels, and car rentals, reserve an initial amount but settle a different amount later. For example:

  • Restaurants: After you pay, they might add a tip (more common in the US).

  • Rentals or Hotels: They charge a higher amount upfront and refund you if you return the property in good condition.

  • Gas Stations: They charge a larger amount initially and refund you for the unused gas.

Transparency is our priority, and we're committed to keeping you informed every step of the way 🌈
