What is the tax identification number?

The tax identification number (NIF) is a sequence of 13 digits (format: 99 99 999 999 999). The first digit is always 0, 1, 2 or 3. The French tax authority assigns a NIF to everyone who has a tax obligation in France.

Where can I find my tax identification number (NIF)?

The NIF doesn’t appear on any official identity document (such as your ID card or passport). You can find it on the first page of your pre-filled income tax return and on the first page of your income tax assessment notice, housing tax (taxe d’habitation) or property tax (taxe foncière). A pre-filled tax return or a tax assessment notice can be linked to several people. In that case, each taxpayer’s NIF is shown in the same order as the information listed in the “État civil” (civil status) field of the document.

If you have no tax obligation in France

Minors don’t have a NIF. However, as soon as they turn 18 and if their parents are French taxpayers, they’re identified in the tax authority’s database, even if they have no tax obligation.
