Hey bunqers 🌈,

You can get contactless card payments for your business on your phone. From physical debit and credit cards to Apple and Google Pay, and other digital wallets, no terminal or hardware is needed. It’s easy, secure, and private.

To make it even easier, you can start a payment request directly from your phone's home screen with the Tap to Pay widget, so your customers never see your Home Tab, your balances, or your Net Wealth.

Tap to Pay costs 1.5% of every payment you receive, and that’s it — no fixed fee on top of each payment, no extra subscriptions and no card readers to hire or buy.

How do I get paid with Tap to Pay?

Request the amount in your bunq app and hold your phone against your customer's card or phone. Here's how:

  1. Switch to your Business Account

  2. Tap your Profile in the top left corner

  3. Tap Tap to Pay

  4. Turn on Tap to Pay and follow the setup flow

  5. Choose the currency, the amount you're requesting, and the Bank Account that receives the payment

  6. Tap Next

  7. Hold your phone against your customer's card or phone

  8. All done 🎉

You only go through setup once. After that, the payment itself is as quick as the tap.

Can I start Tap to Pay from my phone’s home screen?

Absolutely! You can add the Tap to Pay widget to your phone's home screen. When you tap it, it opens straight to the place where you can enter the payment amount — no need to scroll through the app to set it up!

  1. Add the Tap to Pay widget on your home screen

  2. Enter the amount you're requesting

  3. Check the Bank Account shown at the bottom of the screen, and change it if you want the money somewhere else

  4. Tap Next

  5. Hold your phone against your customer's card or phone

How do I add the Tap to Pay widget to my home screen?

You can add the Tap to Pay widget straight from your bunq app. Simply get paid with Tap to Pay, then tap Add the Widget from your payment confirmation screen. You can also add the widget the exact same way you add any other widget on your phone.

On iOS

  1. Touch and hold an empty area on your phone’s home screen

  2. Tap Edit in the top left corner

  3. Search bunq

  4. Select Tap to Pay widget

  5. Tap Add Widget

On Android

  1. Touch and hold an empty area on your phone’s home screen

  2. Tap Widgets

  3. Find bunq

  4. Select Tap to Pay widget

  5. Tap Add Widget

I haven't set up Tap to Pay yet. Can I still use the widget?

If you tap the widget before you've set up Tap to Pay, it opens the setup flow instead of the amount entry screen. Finish your Tap to Pay setup once, and from then on the widget goes straight to the amount entry.

If your business isn't eligible for Tap to Pay, we’ll let you know. The business codes that can't use Tap to Pay are listed further down this article.

I run more than one business. Which one does the widget use?

The widget uses one business at a time, and you choose which. If more than one of your businesses has Tap to Pay set up, you pick the business in the widget's settings, or from a picker that appears before the amount entry screen.

If only one of your businesses is eligible for Tap to Pay, the widget uses that one and you won't see a picker at all.

Can my customer see my balances while I take a payment?

No, and that's the beauty of the widget. Tapping the widget goes straight to the amount entry screen without loading your Home Tab, so your balances and your Net Wealth stay off screen while your customer is looking at your phone.

The only things on screen during the payment are the amount you're requesting and the Bank Account name you've selected.

Who can use Tap to Pay?

You can use Tap to Pay if you're a verified Business user in Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, or Spain, on any plan, and your business isn't in one of the excluded merchant categories.

You'll also need:

  • An Android device, or an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18.5 or later

  • A completed verification — Tap to Pay doesn't work on an unverified account

  • A business in an eligible merchant category. You can check yours against the full list of eligible merchants by SBI code

Employees with Full Access to a Business Account can use Tap to Pay too.

Which merchants aren't eligible for Tap to Pay?

These merchant categories can't use Tap to Pay: :

  • Bars

  • Art galleries

  • Tour operators

  • Travel agencies

  • Tourist information and reservation services

  • Home care

  • Residential nursing care

  • Residential care for the elderly

  • Welfare for elderly

  • Social work for adults

  • Social work for children

  • Social assistance with residential and day care for children

  • Counseling and welfare for disabled

  • Residential and day care for persons with disabilities

  • Specialist medical practices and outpatients' clinics, other than dentistry and psychiatry

  • Practices of psychotherapists and psychologists

  • Other paramedical practitioners and alternative healers, other than physiotherapy and psychology

  • Sale and repair of passenger cars and light motor vehicles, other than import of new cars

  • Renting of passenger cars and light motor vehicles, other than operational lease

If your category is on this list, you can still get paid in person with a bunq Payment Request. Create one in the app and your customer pays by bank transfer or iDEAL, with the money arriving in your Bank Account the same way any incoming payment does.

What are Tap to Pay fees?

You pay €1.50 in transaction fees for every €100 you bring in with Tap to Pay payments — 1.5% on every card payment you get. The full payment lands in your bank account, the 1.5% fee is billed separately with your monthly invoice. So €100 in card payments costs you €1.50 whether it took 1 payment or 20.

When does the money reach my Bank Account?

As soon as the card payment settles. This can take a couple of minutes or up to 7 days after the payment has been made. Until then you'll see it in your app as a pending payment, which means the amount is approved and reserved on your customer's card but hasn't been settled to you yet.

The payment moves to your Bank Account on its own, and you'll see the balance change when it does.

Why is my Tap to Pay payment still pending?

A Tap to Pay payment can take as long as 7 days depending on how fast the card payment settles. That's normal, and there are three statuses you'll see:

  • Payment pending — your customer's card was authorized and the amount is reserved, but it hasn't reached your Bank Account yet.

  • Payment received — the money is in your Bank Account and yours to spend.

  • Refund successful — you refunded the payment, in full or in part.

If a payment is still pending well past 7 days, message us in your Support chat and we'll check what's holding it.

How do I refund a Tap to Pay payment?

You can refund any Tap to Pay payment, in full or in part, straight from the payment in your app:

  1. Go to 🏠 Home Tab

  2. Select the Bank Account

  3. Tap the payment you want to refund

  4. Tap Refund Payment

  5. Choose the amount and confirm

The refund event appears in your app immediately as "Refund successful". If the original payment hasn't reached your Bank Account yet, your customer gets their money back within 5 working days.

How do I share a receipt with my customer?

Every Tap to Pay payment has a receipt in your app that you can share from the payment itself:

  1. Go to 🏠 Home Tab

  2. Tap the Bank Account you received the payment on

  3. Tap the payment event

  4. Tap Receipt

  5. Tap the Share icon in the top right corner

  6. Share the receipt with your customer

  7. Done ✅
