Which ID types are accepted?

Hey bunqers 🌈,

We always need to keep your valid, up-to-date identity document in our system. That’s why we’ll ask you to update your ID if it’s about to expire. This is a requirement under EU and local regulations that helps keep our entire bunq community secure and keeps your account running smoothly.

This applies to you if your ID is close to its expiry date and you’re:

  • A resident of France or Spain

  • A holder of an active French or Spanish IBAN

  • A Russian or Belarusian national

To make life easy for you, we’ll give you a heads-up when your ID is about to expire. This makes it super easy to upload a new one and keep your account running smoothly. You'll get your first friendly reminder 90 days before it expires, and a few more after that, so you have plenty of time to get it sorted.

Which ID types are accepted?

You can upload the following ID types:

  • If you’re a French or Spanish resident, or IBAN holder: any valid ID type is accepted

  • If you're a Russian or Belarusian national: only a valid EU/EEA/Swiss residence permit or passport with an expiration date in the future is accepted

How do I upload my new ID?

When it’s time to update your ID, we’ll send you a message in the app with simple, step-by-step instructions. Just follow the flow in the chat to upload your new document.

A few quick tips for a successful submission:

  • If you’re uploading an ID card, driver's license, or residence permit, please make sure to send us both the front and back

  • Make sure your document is valid and not expired

  • Check that you're uploading an accepted document type

What happens if I don’t upload it in time?

To keep your account secure, it's important to have a valid ID on file. If your document expires before you can upload a new one, we'll need to temporarily limit your account. When an account is limited, any incoming payments will still arrive safely in your account. However, you won't be able to log in or make payments. When you open the app, you'll be guided directly to a screen where you can upload your new ID.

Getting your account back to normal is simple! You can securely upload your new document in our Support Chat. As soon as our team verifies it, you'll have full access to your account again.
