Hey 🌈
You can request to have your data deleted at any time after bunq has been permanently closed by bunq — this is your right to data erasure under the GDPR. And we’re here to make it as easy as possible for you.
When you ask for your data to be deleted, we delete everything we're allowed to delete within 10 working days.
How do I request to delete my data when bunq closes my account?
Email privacy@bunq.com and tell us you'd like your personal data deleted
We check which of your data we can delete. In these cases we sometimes have to keep more of it, and for longer
We tell you what we're deleting and what we're keeping, and we let you know when the deletion is done
For your balance and your timeline, read Where is my money after my account was closed?
What conditions need to be met if I request data deletion?
If you request account closure and data deletion, use the email address linked to your bunq account so we can match your request to your profile.
Deletion happens after your account is permanently closed. You can ask for it before then, but your account has to be closed first for us to act on it.
What happens after I send my request?
We delete the data we can delete, in line with our privacy statement, within 10 working days
We confirm we completed your request by sending you a confirmation email to the email address you reached out to us from.
What data can bunq delete?
We aim to delete the personal data we've collected about you, with one exception: data we're legally required to hold on to.
Data we delete: anything we no longer need for the purpose we collected it for, once your request is approved.
Data we have to keep: as a European bank, we're legally required to retain certain records — for example, to meet financial regulations. We can't delete these, even at your request. To see exactly when and why we retain data, read our Data Retention and Disposal Policy.
Data that no longer identifies you: in some cases we keep data for longer if it's been pseudonymized or anonymized, which means it can't be traced back to you.
What other data rights do I have?
Deletion is one of several rights the GDPR gives you. You can exercise any of the following by writing to privacy@bunq.com:
Access your data: ask for a copy of the personal data we hold about you, in a structured and machine-readable format.
Correct your data: ask us to update anything that's incorrect or incomplete.
Restrict how we use your data: ask us to pause our processing while a question about your data is being resolved.
Object to how we use your data: tell us you don't want us to process your data where we do so based on our legitimate interest.
For the full list and what each right covers, read section 8 of our Privacy Statement.
