In Germany, extra verification is required for investment platforms. This is because German regulation for Stock investments is stricter than in other countries.

To comply with the German regulations, we use Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) and a reference payment to confirm your identity.

What is a Qualified Electronic Signature (QES)?

A Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) is like your handwritten signature, but digital!

It offers the highest level of security for signing documents online. Using QES helps us verify your identity, in order to ensure that your Stocks account stays safe and secure.

How do I create a QES?

You can create your unique Qualified Electronic Signature (QES) by following these steps:

  1. Open your bunq App: Go to the Stocks tab.

  2. Get started: Tap on Start Investing from Just €10.

  3. Start by: Verifying your profile details and tap on Confirm.

  4. SMS Verification: Enter your phone number. Then, enter the code you received to continue.

  5. Identity Verification: Submit a photo of your ID document and take a selfie 📸

  6. Sign the QES agreement: Open the link in the email you received from eSignAnywhere and sign the QES agreement document.

  7. Accept Terms & Conditions: Tap on Accept Terms & Conditions.

  8. Reference Payment: Transfer at least €0.01 from a non-bunq (external) bank account registered in your name to your bunq account. This step is a regulatory requirement in Germany to prove your identity.

  9. Once you sign the QES agreement and we receive the payment from your non-bunq bank account, you can instantly start trading stocks✨

What if my German Stock Account Verification takes longer than expected?

If your German Stock Account isn't verified a few minutes after the transfer arrives, please check if the reference payment arrived in your bunq account.

We confirm your identity from the payment we receive from your external bank account. If your other bank didn’t send the payment instantly, it might take up to 1 business day for that payment to arrive. Rest assured you will be able to trade stocks instantly, as soon as the payment has arrived.

What if I received the reference payment but the verification is still not complete?

We use the sender’s name in the SEPA transfer to verify ownership. If the transfer payment is received but the name from the external bank account doesn’t match the name on your bunq account - the Stocks account verification won’t go through.

Please make sure that the name on the account you send the reference payment from matches the name on your bunq account.

If it doesn’t, make a new transfer of at least €0.01 from a non-bunq bank account registered under your name.

Why can't I buy Stocks?
