Why can’t I add my card to Google Pay?

If you’re experiencing issues adding your card to your Google Wallet, no worries! Whenever possible, we’ll explain why this is happening by sending you a quick notification. If you missed it, you can always check and find it in by going to the Profile tab and tapping the bell icon 🔔 in the top right corner. We’ll explain the reason for the failure, so you can fix it as soon as possible, because in most cases, you can easily fix this completely by yourself and try again.

Let’s take a look at some common issues which lead to issues connecting your card to Google Pay and how we can solve them together:

Is your bunq Card frozen? Whenever a card is frozen, it can’t be added to Google Pay. To add it to Google Pay, simply reactivate it and try again. You can do this by:

  1. Go to the Cards Tab

  2. Select the card you're trying to add to Google Pay

  3. Tap on reactivate, and you’re all set to try again!

Is the CVC/Expiry Date correct? If you’re adding your card to Google Pay from your Google Wallet, you’ll be asked to provide the card’s CVC and Expiry Date. In these cases, a simple typo can often be the culprit. It’s always worth a second look to make sure the CVC and expiry date match what’s in the app. Here’s how you can check them:

  1. Go to the Cards Tab

  2. Select your card

  3. Carefully enter those details again in your Google Wallet

Is your card linked to a Bank Account? For your card to work with Google Pay, it must be linked to one of your Bank Accounts. Here’s how to check and link it:

  1. Go to the Cards Tab

  2. Choose your card

  3. Tap on Pay From and select the Bank Account you’d like to use for payments

Was the PIN entered correctly? If you add your card by tapping it against your device, it will ask for your card's PIN for security. Make sure you're using the PIN associated with your bunq card, not your phone's passcode.

A decision from Google. For your security, the final approval comes from Google. Occasionally, they may decline the request. This decision is entirely theirs, and for privacy reasons, they don't share the specifics with us. The best step here is to contact Google Support directly, as they’ll have the information to help you.

We’ve listed other possible issues you can experience here. If none of these steps solve the issue, please know we’re here for you. Our support guides are available 24/7.
