What’s a Dutch IBAN?

Hey bunqers 🌈,

The Dutch IBAN is our default IBAN. With a Dutch IBAN, you can bank like a local in the Netherlands. And even if you're not Dutch, your Dutch IBAN is fully legal and accepted everywhere across the EEA.

With the launch of International IBANs, residents in Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Ireland, or Italy can open a bunq account with a local IBAN too. And you can always choose a Dutch IBAN with an International Bank Account. This way, you're always in control and can set up your Bank Accounts just the right way for your international lifestyle.

Important: The International Bank Accounts 🌍 feature is available for bunq Pro and bunq Elite users only. Learn more about International Bank Accounts.

What’s a Dutch IBAN?

bunq is a European bank with a banking license issued by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). So our standard IBANs are based in the Netherlands. You can recognize this when you see the NL in your IBANs 🇳🇱

Even if you're not Dutch, your Dutch IBAN is fully legal and accepted everywhere, by all authorities. If you ever experience any kind of discrimination because of your Dutch IBAN, you can report it, and we'll help. See how you can do this in our IBAN discrimination article.

How can I get a Dutch IBAN?

Just sign up, verify your identity, and your Dutch IBAN bank account is ready-to-go. Whenever you'd like, you can also add an extra Dutch Bank Account by following these steps:

  1. Go to the Home Tab

  2. Tap on Add an Extra Bank Account

  3. Select a Personal Account

  4. Choose a Dutch IBAN under Local Settings

  5. Personalize your Bank Account

  6. All done!

If you've opened an account in Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Ireland, or Italy and you're on the bunq Pro or bunq Elite plan, you can also add a Dutch IBAN with the International Bank Account feature. Learn more about International Bank Accounts 🌍
