How can I get a Bank Account with a Belgian IBAN?
If you're new to bunq and live in Belgium
Welcome to bunq! If you live in Belgium when you sign up, your Belgian IBAN is set up for you from the start. Here's all it takes:
Sign up for bunq. Fill in your personal information, like your place of birth
Verify your identity. Scan your ID and take a quick selfie 🤳
That's it, your Belgian IBAN is ready to use 🎉
No matter which plan you pick, bunq Free, Core, Pro, or Elite, your Bank Accounts will have Belgian IBANs when you sign up with a Belgian address.
If you're already using bunq and live in Belgium
Already banking with bunq? You're just a few taps away from a Belgian IBAN. To make the switch to a Belgian IBAN super simple for you, we'll display a pop-up in your Home tab to Get a Belgian IBAN. Here's the step-by-step:
Open your bunq app
Tap on Get a Belgian IBAN
Go through the verification flow
Done — you're a Belgian user now! All your new Bank Accounts will automatically have Belgian IBANs going forward.
During verification, we’ll ask you for all the missing information to start using BE IBANS. This might include things like re-identification with a valid ID and place of birth.
To keep your banking easy and flexible, you’ll always have the option of getting your preferred IBAN by setting up an International Bank Account.
If you’re already using bunq and move to Belgium
It's super simple to get an Belgian IBAN account, even if you're already using bunq and have Dutch IBAN accounts. First, update your address in your bunq app to keep all of your personal information up-to-date. Here's how:
Go to Your Profile
Tap on Personal Information
Tap on Address and add your new Belgian address details
Save it
You'll get a pop-up in your Home tab to obtain your new, Belgian IBAN. Simply tap on the pop-up event and:
Tap on Get a Belgian IBAN
Go through the verification flow
Done — all your new Bank Accounts will automatically have Belgian IBANs
Going forward, all newly created Bank Accounts will automatically have a Belgian IBAN. To keep your banking easy and flexible, you’ll always have the option of getting your preferred IBAN by setting up an International Bank Account.
What if I'm not a Belgian resident but I still want a Belgian IBAN?
Living elsewhere in the EEA but want a BE IBAN? You're covered. On the bunq Pro or bunq Elite plan, you can add an International Bank Account and pick a Belgian IBAN for it. Here's how:
Go to your Home tab
Tap on Add an Extra Bank Account
Select International Bank Account
Choose a Belgian IBAN
Tap on Start verification and go with the flow
Re-confirm your phone number
Agree to our T&Cs
Once you're verified, your new Belgian IBAN bank account is ready-to-go!

What happens to my old IBAN accounts?
Nothing changes for the accounts you already have. Your previous IBAN accounts keep working exactly as before. To get a Belgian IBAN, open a new account.
What is my BIC / SWIFT code?
You'll sometimes need your BIC (or SWIFT) code for international transfers. For your Belgian IBAN it's:
BUNQBEB2
Can I link my new Belgian IBAN to my card?
Yes! Your Belgian IBAN works just like your other Bank Accounts, so you're free to set any card to pay from it. Here's how:
Go to the Cards Tab
Tap the card you want to update
Tap Auto Select under "Pay From"
Select your Belgian IBAN account ✅
Want to switch back later? Just repeat these steps and pick a different account.
Keep in mind you can only link regular Bank Accounts to your card, so your Savings Account and Easy Investments Account can't be used as a card's billing account.

Does bunq support structured communication (+/+) for Belgian payments?
Yes! In Belgium, many invoices and bills come with a structured communication, the +++ reference that automatically links your payment to the right invoice. You can use it with your Belgian IBAN, so your rent, utilities, and tax payments are matched correctly every time.

What's the difference between International Bank Accounts and Foreign Currency accounts?
A quick one to clear up: an International Bank Account gives you a local IBAN from another European country, while a Foreign Currency account lets you hold and spend money in a currency other than the euro.

What if I move to Belgium but don't want to get a Belgian IBAN?
No problem at all — if you're a bunqer and already live in Belgium or are moving there, you can simply dismiss the pop-up to Get a BelgianIBAN in your Home tab. Here's how:
Tap on Get an Belgian IBAN
Tap on Maybe later
The pop-up will disappear
Your existing Bank Accounts and IBANs stay exactly as they are. Change your mind later? You can always get a Belgian IBAN by adding an Extra Bank Account and choosing a Belgian IBAN.
Keep in mind: this works if you're already using bunq. If you're signing up with a Belgian address for the first time, your Bank Accounts will come with a Belgian IBAN by default.
