What are International Bank Accounts?

Hey bunqers 🌈,

International Bank Accounts with foreign IBANs are here, and they’re the perfect fit for your international lifestyle. Easily add and use IBANs from multiple European countries - all in your bunq app. The feature is available for all verified bunq Pro (Personal and Business) and bunq Elite (Personal and Business) users across the EEA 😎

What are International Bank Accounts?

International Bank Accounts are a perfect solution if you need to establish a local presence abroad for your personal and business account because they have the local IBAN of your chosen country. For instance, when you’re doing business in multiple countries, travel often to the same place or plan to go abroad for a while to study or work.

Note: If you reside in Germany, France, Spain or Ireland, the app will automatically switch you to your foreign branch and let you open Bank Accounts corresponding to your location 🙌

How do I create a Foreign IBAN?

  1. Go to 🏠 Home tab

  2. Tap on Add an Extra Bank Account

  3. Select International Bank Account

  4. Choose which IBAN you'd like

  5. Personalize your Bank Account

  6. Done ✅

What's the difference between International Bank Accounts and Foreign Currencies?

International Bank Accounts

International Bank Accounts have IBANs based on the foreign Dutch, German, French, Irish and Spanish banking metrics and operate in Euro. This means that you open a Bank Account with one of our foreign branches and your IBAN matches the nationality you've chosen. You can see more on how the International Bank Accounts work here.

Important note: All the Bank Accounts you open within the app, no matter of the country code in the IBAN, are supported and opened by bunq NL.

Foreign Currencies

Foreign Currencies is a feature which gives you the opportunity to send, receive and pay in one of the many foreign currencies we currently provide. For example, you can have a South African Rand foreign currency account, but not a South African IBAN. When you open a Foreign Currencies Account, you're getting a GB IBAN since the foreign currency isn't held in the Netherlands, but in the UK. You can learn all about operating with this cool feature here.

Good to know

  • If you've been through the verification flow already - you won't repeat the verification process for your International Bank Account

  • This feature isn't available for minors, meaning that you must be at least 18 years old in order to use this feature

  • The currently-available countries to open an International Bank Account for are Germany, France, Spain, Ireland and the Netherlands 🌍
