Our aim is to keep your bank account and your funds secure.

With this in mind, we monitor activity and transactions on all bunq accounts to prevent any misuse of our services and maintain a safe banking environment. Upon review, we may request extra info and documentation from our users, to better understand how the account is used and what to expect to see on it, as mentioned and explained in Chapter 9. Eligibility and account requirements of our Terms & Conditions.

We do this in order to preserve the integrity of the banking system, ensure fairness of use, and keep your accounts up-to-date and on track ✅

Such inquiries are based on:

  • Our legal obligations to perform continuous customer due diligence

  • The WWFT (Wet ter voorkoming van witwassen en financieren van terrorisme)

  • All related and equivalent European legislation and law

How does the process work?

We will send you an inquiry via the in-app chat asking some more details and documents if needed, regarding your account use and activities. This is a regular routine check process required by any bank, so if you receive such an inquiry, there’s nothing to be bothered about.

Once the needed info is provided from your side, our relevant team will review it for you and no further actions are needed from your side. Our team will only return to you if we have extra questions regarding your account’s activity.

Note: Please have in mind that for more extensive document and information requests we may reach out via review@bunq.com.

What should I provide you with?


Since we need to have a clear record of your source(s) of income and the activities on your account, we will ask questions related to these. To confirm your main source of income, you can provide one of the following:

  • ✅ Recent salary payslip

  • ✅ Employment contract

  • ✅ Tax declaration

  • ✅ Bank statement of another account of yours no older than 6 months (with proof of regular income)

  • ✅ Document clarifying the source of the money received on your bunq account, not older than 6 months

  • ✅ Explanation on the purpose of specific transactions on your bunq account.

To find out whether we've already asked you to provide us with some of the information above, you can simply follow the steps here.

If there’s no pending event or unanswered inquiry, you can contact our Support team for further assistance. Keep in mind that the relevant department reviews the information you provided within the next 5 working days.

We may also inquire about a specific transaction or person/counterparty you engaged with. In such cases, we’d ask you to provide us with more insight regarding the reason for the payment(s), how you are related to the other person or entity and some supporting documentation for the transaction(s). This could be:

  • ✅ an invoice

  • ✅ mutual contract or agreement

  • ✅ any other relevant document that will serve as proof of the payment(s) and gives a clear record and reasoning

In any case, please provide us with accurate detailed information which will help us best understand your account activities and will minimize the duration of our inquiry and review process.

Can I send documents in advance to ensure my payment succeeds?

Our monitoring system is fully automated, which means we're unable to predict which transactions might need additional checks. That's why we don't request or expect you to provide supporting documents before a transaction is actually created. Rest assured, if we need any further details for your transaction(s), we'll reach out to you through the secure in-app chat. You'll also receive a notification in the Awaiting Events on your Home screen and the Activity log.

What happens if I don’t provide the needed document(s)?

Sometimes we can temporarily restrict your account if you fail to respond to the above-mentioned inquiries. We'll always make sure to inform you about any action on your account from our side. For more information on this you can check here.

If the inquiry was related to a pending payment, we may decline it due to insufficient information being provided.

bunq doesn't terminate an account without further explanation, since account termination is something we take seriously. We may have to move forward and terminate your account only if we’ve noticed activity against our Terms & Conditions. Feel free to find more info here.
