What are International Bank Accounts?

Hey bunqers 🌈,

With an International Bank Account, you can add and use IBANs from multiple European countries right in your bunq app, so your account details fit wherever life takes you.

International Bank Accounts are available to verified bunq Pro and bunq Elite users (Personal and Business) across the EEA.

What are International Bank Accounts?

An International Bank Account gives you a local IBAN from the country you choose, which is handy when you need a local presence abroad. It's a good fit if you do business in more than one country, travel often to the same place, or plan to study or work abroad for a while.

You can choose an IBAN from any of the following countries:

  • 🇩🇪 Germany (DE)

  • 🇫🇷 France (FR)

  • 🇮🇪 Ireland (IE)

  • 🇪🇸 Spain (ES)

  • 🇮🇹 Italy (IT)

  • 🇳🇱 Netherlands (NL)

Each account operates in euros, and you can open more than one.

Note: If you live in the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Ireland, or Italy, the app automatically connects you to your local branch, so you can open Bank Accounts with an IBAN that matches where you live from the get-go.

How do I create an International Bank Account?

  1. Open your 🏠 Home tab

  2. Tap on Add an Extra Bank Account

What's the difference between International Bank Accounts and Foreign Currencies?

International Bank Accounts

International Bank Accounts give you a local IBAN from another European country German, French, Irish, Spanish, or Italian) and operate in euro. This means that you open a Bank Account with one of our foreign branches and your IBAN matches the country you chose.

Important note: All the Bank Accounts you open within the app, no matter of the country code in the IBAN, are supported and opened by bunq NL.

Foreign Currencies

Foreign Currencies let you send, receive and pay in one of the many currencies we support. For example, you can have a South African Rand foreign currency account, but not a South African IBAN. When you open a Foreign Currencies Account, you'll get a GB IBAN since the foreign currency is held in the UK rather than the Netherlands. Learn more in our Foreign Currencies article.

Good to know

  • You must be at least 18 years old to open an International Bank Accounts

  • You can currently get an IBAN from these countries: Germany, France, Spain, Ireland, Italy and the Netherlands

  • If you've already verified your identity, you won't need to do it again to add another International Bank Account, unless you're opening a French or Italian IBAN. French and Italian banking rules require identity re-verification as an extra security step to keep you safe.
