What's currency volatility and how can it affect my savings?
Savings in foreign currencies can change in value due to currency volatility. Volatility is how much and how fast a currency's value moves โ mainly driven by inflation, interest rate decisions, and a country's political and economic stability.
Your interest is paid in the foreign currency, but the euro amount you'd get back changes with the exchange rate. So your balance can grow in dollars and still be worth less in euros than you started with.
Inflation is the biggest driver:
High inflation makes a currency less stable and more volatile. Its value can move sharply either way โ more room for gain, more risk of loss.
Low inflation makes a currency more stable and its value more predictable.
Only open a Foreign Currency Savings Account if you're comfortable with the euro value of your savings moving.
How volatile are the currencies I can save in?
From lowest to highest, based on how each has behaved against the euro historically. Past behavior isn't a forecast.
๐ฆ๐ช AED โ very low volatility. Its value is pegged to the US dollar, which keeps it stable against the euro. The remote risk is the peg being abandoned.
๐บ๐ธ USD โ low to medium volatility. EUR/USD is the world's most traded currency pair, moved by the European Central Bank and the US Federal Reserve. The dollar is the main safe-haven currency.
๐ฌ๐ง GBP โ medium volatility. Driven by the gap in economic performance and interest rates between the eurozone and the UK, set by the European Central Bank and the Bank of England. Trade friction with the EU also moves it.
๐ณ๐ด NOK โ medium volatility. Moved by global energy prices and by Norges Bank's monetary policy, so it leans heavily on the energy sector.
๐ฆ๐บ AUD โ medium volatility. A commodity currency, closely tied to global trade and commodity prices.
๐ต๐ฑ PLN โ medium volatility. Moved by Poland's domestic inflation and by regional stability in Eastern Europe.
๐ฟ๐ฆ ZAR โ high volatility. Moved by political uncertainty and economic instability in South Africa, and tends to weaken in any period of global instability.
๐น๐ท TRY โ very high volatility. High domestic inflation, ongoing economic pressure, and political uncertainty. This is the highest rate on the list and the highest risk on the list, and those two facts are the same fact.
The euro value of foreign currencies can fluctuate as a result of currency volatility. Only open a Foreign Savings Account if you understand the risks which come with currency fluctuations.
