Hey bunqers 🌈,
Your bunq Credit Card is designed to give you total freedom. It’s accepted everywhere, so you can pay easily anywhere in the world.
By default, it helps you stay debt-free and only lets you spend the money you have in your bank accounts. But we listen to your feedback and we understand that sometimes, a little more flexibility is needed. That’s why you can now get up to €5,000 in credit on your bunq Credit Card.
Please note: the only way to start using credit with your credit card right now is by signing up for early access. Until your confirmation email arrives, the option to add a Credit limit won't appear in your bunq app, so the steps on this page won't match what you see just yet. We're planning on rolling this out to more people very soon!
Who is credit available to?
We’re super excited to bring the option to add up to €5,000 in credit to your bunq Credit Cards.
Right now, it's available to the first 1,000 eligible bunq users in each of these countries: the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain. To get access, sign up through the official early access form, and we’ll reach out to you via email as soon as you can claim your spot. You can start applying for your credit limit only after you've signed up and once you got our email confirmation that you've got early access.
You have to meet the following conditions to be eligible to apply for credit:
Be 18 years old or older
Reside in the Netherlands, Germany, or Spain
Have a verified Personal account with any of the available bunq plans
Have a regular source of income
No worries if you didn’t make it in time to sign up. You can join our waitlist as we’ll be rolling credit out to more users and even more countries soon 🚀
Please note: Credit doesn’t extend to Business Credit Cards.
How does credit work?
Simple, when you add credit to your bunq Credit Card, you get more spending power. Think of it as a flexible loan that lets you spend beyond your current account balance, depending on your personal situation up to a maximum of €5,000. This gives you the room to make larger purchases or handle unexpected costs with ease.
The credit you use during the month will be automatically repaid from your bank account on the 1st day of the following month with no extra fees or interest. So simple, you don’t even have to think about it. As always, you stay in complete control, so you can always manually repay the credit, in full or partially, before the repayment date.
How do we determine how much credit you can add to your card?
We want to make sure your credit limit is a perfect fit for you, so we run a quick check to understand your financial picture. This helps us find a safe and comfortable limit for you, anywhere between €500 and €5,000. As a simple rule, we'll never offer more than your verified monthly income, so you can always spend with confidence.
How can I add a credit limit?
When you do need that extra flexibility, we’ve made it simple to get. To add credit to your existing Credit Card, you can simply:

We’ll run a quick evaluation, and approve your application

Can I divide my credit between multiple cards?
Absolutely - you're in full control over your credit and how you manage it. You can divide your credit limit across multiple bunq Credit Cards. Simply set your preferred credit limit for each card, and divide it amongst the cards you’d like to have credit on!
Keep in mind: The total credit limit we currently offer is €5000, and that’s the total amount which can be split between your Credit Cards.
Can I order a new card without credit?
Of course! Simply order your card by following these steps:
Go to your Cards Tab in the bunq app.
Tap on Add Card
Select a Digital or Physical Credit Card
Tap on Add Credit Card
Add your card details and tap on Get Your Card
Select Use Card Without Credit Limit
All done!
How do I repay my credit?
To make it easy for you, we take care of your credit repayment!
On the 1st day of every month, we’ll automatically debit the Bank Account you chose when setting up your credit limit. All you need to do is make sure there’s enough balance to cover your credit limit in there! This is because the automatic repayment always covers the full credit amount. If there aren't enough funds to cover the entire amount, the payment won’t go through. To keep you in the loop, we’ll always send you a notification when the amount gets deducted, or if the automatic repayment doesn’t go through.
Whether you’d like to repay your balance off earlier or need to settle it after an automatic payment doesn’t go through, you can do it yourself. Here’s how:
Open your bunq app
Select your Credit card with the credit
Tap on Repay
Repay the amount from a bank account and tap Repay Credit Balance
All done!
And the best part? As long as you settle the credit on time, you won’t pay any interest!
What if I can't repay my credit on time?
If there aren’t enough funds in your chosen bank account to repay your credit in time, that credit becomes overdue.
Interest-free Grace Period
We understand that life’s busy and everyone forgets some due dates sometimes. That’s why we have set up an 8-day interest-free grace period which allows time for you to pay the overdue credit back. This means that from the 1st to the 8th of the month, no interest is applied to your overdue credit.
How Interest is calculated
If the grace period is over and overdue credit isn’t settled, interest will start to apply on the remaining amount. This means that from the 9th day of the month, interest is applied to your overdue credit amount.
Our annual interest rate is 12%. This rate is variable and we update it every 6 months, in January and July. You can always find the current interest rate in our Pricing Sheet.
How is the interest charged?
We apply the annual interest rate to your overdue credit, and divide it by the number of days in the current year to find the daily interest owed. The daily interest owed gets added to the total amount of interest that you’ll need to pay back.
For example:
Let’s imagine your credit of €5,000 is due on the 1st of May but, due to a lower balance on your bank account, the automatic repayment won’t go through. Let’s break down how we calculate the daily interest:
We apply the interest rate (12%) to your overdue credit (€5000). This comes out to €600.
We divide €600 by 365 days, to find the daily interest. This comes out to €1,64.
This is how the total interest owed gets calculated:
From October 1 to October 8: You have 8 interest-free days to settle your credit.
Your overdue credit is €5000. No interest is owed at this point.
On October 9 (Day 1): The interest-free period ends and the first day’s interest of €1,64 is added.
Your overdue credit is €5000. The total interest owed is €1,64
On October 10 (Day 2): Another day’s interest of €1,64 is added.
Your overdue credit is €5000. The total interest owed is €3,29
On October 15 (Day 7): Daily interest of €1,64 continues to be added per day.
Your overdue credit is €5000. The total interest owed is €11,51
You decide to pay back €2000 of the credit back. Your payment clears the €11,51 interest first (€2000 - €11,51), then reduces the overdue credit (€5000 - €1988.49)
Your overdue credit becomes €3011,51. The total interest owed reduces to €0.
Going forward, the 12% interest rate will be applied to the new overdue balance of €3011,51.
On October 16 (Day 8): We recalculate your daily interest based on your new, lower overdue credit balance. It’s now €0,99!
Your overdue credit is €3011,51. The total interest owed is €0,99
You pay everything off by repaying €3,012.50. No more interest is applied.
How can I repay my overdue credit?
To make it easy for you, we’ll send a notification that the amount could not have been paid when the repayment fails. This way, you’re alerted as soon as possible and you have the chance to repay the credit before the interest starts accumulating. You can tap on the notification to manually pay out the amount and avoid paying interest by following these steps:
Open the message
Tap on Pay Now
Confirm your payment
What can I expect if I don’t pay the overdue credit?
We want to be as transparent as possible about what you can expect if you’re not able to repay your credit after the 8 day grace period is over. If the outstanding balance isn’t paid out:
After 8 days:
Your overdue credit from the previous month will start accumulating interest until the outstanding balance and interest are fully settled.
You can still use your Credit Limit for new purchases in the current month. This means that any new payments you make using your credit won’t be charged interest, as long as you pay it back by the 1st of the next month.
After 30 days:
Your overdue credit balance will continue accumulating interest and we’ll temporarily block your Credit to prevent debt from growing.
To unblock it, you just need to repay the full outstanding balance, including any accumulated interest.
During this time you can still use your card to spend the money in your bank account.
After 60 days:
If any overdue credit balance from the past 60 days remains unpaid, we’ll permanently block your credit limit to protect you from accumulating further debt.
During this time you can still use your card to spend the money in your account.
After 90 days:
We’re required to report the outstanding debt to the credit bureau and our debt collection partner, PairFinance, takes over. They’ll be in touch with you to arrange the payment of the overdue credit and interest.
Interest will continue to accumulate on the full overdue amount until it’s completely settled.
What happens if I spend more than my credit limit?
We understand that life can be unpredictable, and sometimes, we may need to make purchases over the credit limit. Well, we’ve got you covered!
You can simply enable a backup bank account for your credit. When enabled, your card will automatically pay from your chosen account after you’ve reached your Credit Limit. This means that whenever you make payments which go over your chosen credit limit for your Credit Card, the balance will be debited directly from your backup bank account. Simple as that.
You can enable this by:
Go to your Cards Tab
Select your Credit Card with credit
Tap on Pay From
Toggle on for Use Bank Account as Backup
Select which bank account you’d like to use as backup
All done!
What if I have more balance available on the card than my credit limit?
If your Credit Card balance is higher than the credit limit, for example, because you’ve gotten a refund from a merchant, you can withdraw the extra money to your bank account. Here’s how:
Go to your Cards Tab
Select your Credit Card with credit
Tap on Withdraw extra money
The total available balance to withdraw will always be displayed at the bottom of this screen
Choose how much you’d like to withdraw and tap on Continue
Select which bank account you’d like to transfer the balance to
Confirm Withdrawal
All done, your extra money is withdrawn!
Why can’t I add credit to my credit card?
Our main priority is to protect your financial well-being.
During our credit assessment, we look at your financial situation to find a credit limit that is safe and manageable for you. If our assessment shows that offering credit could put you at financial risk, or if the safest amount we can offer is below the €500 minimum, we won't be able to offer you credit. This is a safety measure to ensure you can use our features with confidence and without worry.
You can still use the bunq Credit Card, without a credit limit. Simply order a bunq Credit Card and enjoy the flexibility of paying anywhere in the world.
How can I replace my credit card?
If you’d like to replace your card, you can easily do so by following these steps:
Open your bunq app
Select the credit card you want to replace
Tap on Settings in top right corner
Select Replace Card & Confirm
Fill out and edit your card details
Tap on **Order My Card**
All done, your old card is blocked and archived
You can pay from your credit limit with the new card
All replacements are subject to the regular replacement fees. Learn more about replacement costs: here.
What happens if my credit card expires?
If your card will be expiring soon – no worries! We’ll always send a notification to remind you that your card will be expiring. To replace it, you can simply:
Tap on the notification from your lock screen
Tap on Replace Card
Fill out your card details
Tap on Order My Card
All done: Your old card has been blocked and archived.
If your card’s about to expire, we’ll replace it for you free of charge.
Your credit limit is tied to you, not your bunq card. If your card expires, is replaced, or blocked, your credit limit and repayment schedule remain active. The credit will simply be transferred to your new card!
How can I block my credit card?
If you’d like to temporarily block your card:
Open your bunq app
Select the credit card you’d like to block temporarily
Tap on Settings in top right corner
Select Block Card
Select Temporarily Block
Your card is temporarily blocked - it can’t be used for payments or withdrawals
Keep in mind that any outstanding balance you have is still due by the usual date.
To unblock the credit card, you can:
Open your bunq app
Select your card
Tap on Unblock Card
Done - your card is unblocked
If you’d like to permanently block your card:
Open your bunq app
Select the card you’d like to permanently block
Tap on Settings in top right corner
Select Block Card
Select Permanently Block: your card will be cancelled - this can’t be undone ⚠️
Done, your card is blocked and archived. You won’t be able to pay with this card and you’ll need to get a new card to spend within your credit limit.
Keep in mind – you’ll need to repay any outstanding credit balance before you can permanently block your card.
Is there a cash advance fee?
A cash advance fee is a charge we apply when you use your credit card for cash-like transactions rather than regular purchases. This includes withdrawing cash at an ATM, sending money internationally, topping up prepaid cards, gambling transactions, and buying cryptocurrency. The fee is 4% (or minimum €4.5) of the transaction amount.
Where can I find the T&Cs?
Check out the Credit Limit T&Cs.
We’ll also send the Terms & Conditions directly to the email address linked to your bunq account, right after you have accepted your credit offer in the bunq App.
I can't find the option to add a credit limit in my bunq app. Why not?
Adding credit to your Credit card only appears in your bunq app after you have signed up through the early access form and received your invitation email from us. We'll email you as soon as your spot is ready, so you do not need to check the app.
If you haven't got your confirmation email, the option to add credit won't appear in your bunq app yet. In the meantime you can use your bunq Credit Card without a credit limit, and pay with it anywhere in the world from the money in your Bank Accounts.
