We want to make sure you have a convenient experience throughout your whole time with us, from start to finish. That’s why we provide you with two ways to close your bunq account - you pick which one suits your situation best!

How do I close my bunq account?

Closing your account temporarily

When you close your bunq account this way, it becomes temporarily inactive. This means that you can’t receive or send payments from your account and that you’ll no longer be paying monthly fees if you’re on a paid plan. You can always re-activate it at a later time and continue banking with us.

You can close your bunq account from your app by following the steps below:

  1. Tap on your 👤Profile in the top left corner

  2. Tap on your bunq Plan

  3. Tap on "Close Account"

  4. Confirm by tapping on "Close my account"

❗️Please keep in mind that if you close your Business account, your Personal account needs to be closed separately if needed. If you close just one of them, the other will remain active.

If you want to disable the option of ever reactivating your account and close it permanently, you can reach out to us via Support via this link or by following the steps below:

  1. Tap on your Profile in the top left corner

  2. Tap on 🟢 Support

  3. Ask to close your account permanently and we’ll take care of it for you

What happens to my temporarily closed account?

With a temporarily closed account:

  • You can't send or receive payments.

  • You'll no longer be paying monthly fees.

  • You can't sign up for a new bunq account with the same credentials of your closed account.

After closing your account temporarily, there are several actions you can still perform:

What happens to my permanently closed account?

Closing your account permanently means that you'll never be able to have access to it again, such as for tax information, or other cases. We therefore strongly recommend against this option.

💡Pro Tip: Make sure to export all necessary bank statements prior to your account’s permanent closing. You can see how to export a bank statement here

To reopen your bunq account, follow the steps below:

  1. Download and open the bunq app

  2. Use your e-mail or telephone number to log in

  3. "This account has been closed" screen appears

  4. 🟢 Reopen account

  5. Click on Reactivate account

  6. Done!

Important note: Keep in mind that there’s no need to open a brand new bunq account from scratch - simply log back in to reactivate your old account. Forgotten your security code? See how to restore it here

    Yes, you can close your account with money in it (i.e. with a positive balance). Your funds will stay within the app. You can access them any time by re-opening your account.

  2. Can I close my bunq account if I’m in debt?
    You can't close your account if you have more than €15 debt.

  3. Can I close my bunq account if I have an activated Switch Service?
    You can't close the account if you have Dutch Switch Service active from another bank to bunq, but you can do so if you have an active Switch Service from bunq to another bank.

    Simply open the bunq app and enter your security code to enter your closed account. Once you login successfully you’ll see a screen confirming that your account is closed. From there, follow these easy steps:
