What’s included in our Personal accounts?

When you open your Personal accounts, you’ll each get:

  • 1 payment Bank Account

  • 1 Savings Account

  • 1 Joint Account, if you invite a co-owner to join directly from your sign-up

  • 1 Joint savings account, if you invite a co-owner to join directly from your sign-up.

How can I accept a Joint Account invitation?

  1. Go to the 🏠 Home tab

  2. Select the pending the Joint Account

  3. Tap on the ✅ under the invitation

Once everyone accepts their invitations, your Joint Account will become active.

How can I close a Joint Account?

  3. Select Settings

Which country's IBAN does my Joint Account get?

A Joint Account you create gets the same IBAN that your personal Bank Accounts have. So if you live in one of the countries where we offer local IBANs, your Joint Account gets a local IBAN too. We offer local IBANs in 7 countries:

  • 🇧🇪 Belgium (BE)

  • 🇩🇪 Germany (DE)

  • 🇫🇷 France (FR)

  • 🇮🇪 Ireland (IE)

  • 🇪🇸 Spain (ES)

  • 🇮🇹 Italy (IT)

  • 🇳🇱 Netherlands (NL)

You get a Dutch (NL) IBAN in two cases:

  • bunq doesn't offer a local IBAN for your country yet: the 7 countries above are the full list of countries where we currently offer local IBANs

  • Your country of residence isn't verified yet: this is the most common reason for an unexpected NL IBAN. Check your Awaiting Events in the app for anything still open on your profile, then create the Joint Account once your residence is confirmed.

No matter which country code your IBAN starts with, the account is held with bunq — a European bank — and your money is protected the same way.

My co-owner lives in another country. Whose IBAN does the account get?

The IBAN follows whoever creates the account, so it'll be yours. Your co-owner's country of residence doesn't affect it — if you live in Spain and create a Joint Account with someone in Germany, the account gets a Spanish (ES) IBAN.

If you'd rather have an IBAN from your co-owner's country, ask them to create the Joint Account instead. Everything else works the same, and you'll get the invite to accept.

If you need an IBAN from a country neither of you lives in, open an International Bank Account in that country and give the other person Shared Access to it. That's a shared account rather than a jointly owned one, so ownership stays with you.

Good to know

  • A Joint Account counts toward the 25-account limit for bunq Pro and bunq Elite, and the 5 Bank Account limit for bunq Core

  • Once a Joint Account is closed, it can’t be reopened

  • If one co-owner closes the Joint Account, it must be closed for all owners since the right to close it is shared equally

  • If a Joint Account is set as the billing account invoices for the connected Personal accounts will also be deducted from it

  • You can request a Switch Service for a Joint Account as explained here

  • A Joint Account can’t be set up with a Business user, but you can Share Access to a Personal account through Shared Access

  • In the Joint Account transaction history, you can see who made each payment by checking the profile picture next to the transaction, making it easier to track expenses

  • bunq Free users can join unlimited Joint Accounts but can’t create them. These do not count toward the 3-account limit of the bunq Free plan
