Lost your card or want to get a new one? You have the option to block your card Temporarily (deactivate) or Permanently.

What's the difference?

Blocking your card temporarily is a reversible action. If you deactivate your card, you can activate it once again in the future. If you want to reactivate your card, you can find out more here.

Blocking your card permanently is an irreversible action. If you block your card permanently, you can no longer unblock it and you will need to order a new card. You can find out how to order a new card here.

How do I block my card temporarily?

To temporarily block your card, follow the steps below:

1. Go to 💳 Cards tab

2. Select the card you want to deactivate by swiping through your cards

3. Tap on ⚙️ Settings

4. Tap on Block Card

5. Select 🟦 Block Temporarily

6. Done 🎉

How do I block my card permanently?

To block your card, follow the steps below:

Where can I find my blocked cards?

Wondering what happens to your cards when you block them?

Temporarily blocked cards

Your temporarily blocked cards will stay visible in your 💳 Cards Tab.

They will feature a little ❄️ Frozen sign to remind you that they are deactivated. If you would like to reactivate your card, you can do so by following the steps outlined here.

Keep in mind: Temporarily blocked cards still count toward your plan's card limit. If you'd like to order a new card, you may need to permanently block your card before ordering a new one.

For example, if you're on the bunq Free plan, you can only have 1 digital card. When you temporarily block your card and try to order a new one, the app will suggest an upgrade. To get a new digital card and stay on the bunq Free plan without upgrading, you can permanently block your existing card, and then order a new one.

Permanently blocked cards

To keep your 💳 Cards Tab tidy and easy-to–navigate, we move your permanently blocked cards to the *Archive.

If you need to access a permanently blocked card to check your card details, review payments or export a statement, you can do so by following these steps:

1. Go to your 🏡 Home tab

2. Go to your Profile in the top left corner

3. Select Archive

4. Select Cards - your permanently blocked cards are visible here

5. Choose the permanently blocked card you want to view

What happens to my card limit when I block a card permanently?

Blocking a card permanently frees up the spot it took in your plan's card limit, so you can order a new card without upgrading. What it doesn't do is give you back a free card order — the order you already used stays used.

That means the new card comes with the regular order fee for your plan:

• bunq Core — your plan includes 1 physical card, and your first order was free. Once you block that card permanently, a new physical card costs €9.99.

• bunq Pro and bunq Elite — your plan includes 3 physical cards, and your first 3 orders are free. If you've already used all 3, a new physical card costs €9.99, plus €3.49 per month per extra card on Personal accounts.

• Metal Card — a new Metal Card costs €99 on any plan, so if you block your Metal Card permanently, ordering another one costs €99.

• bunq Free — this plan doesn't include physical cards. Your Digital Card can be blocked permanently and re-ordered, and you stay on bunq Free.

Blocking or canceling a card doesn't reset your free order count. This is why permanently blocking a card you'd like to get back is worth a second thought.

Can my card get automatically blocked?

Due to security reasons, your card will be automatically blocked temporarily if there are multiple failed card transactions due to insufficient balance. If the same card keeps experiencing more failed transactions, it'll be blocked permanently.

In case your card is only blocked temporarily, you can re-activate it by simply following the steps explained above - once you do, you'll be able to either top-up the Bank Account linked to the card in question or link the card to a Bank Account with sufficient balance.
